Chapter 1 to 5 Summary

Stanley Yelnats was a fat boy. He didn't do anything bad but everybody thought that he was a bad boy. He seems to be under a curse of having poor or rotten character.

He was unjustly sent to a camp called Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake had no green plants or lakes. It was hot and dirty. It is a boys' detention centre where the boys learn to do good by digging holes all day long.

Stanley's counselor was called Mr. Pendanski. The name Pendanski has similar pronunciation as three simple words: pen, dance and key. Mr. Pendanski was kind. He introduced Stanley to the old campers: Alan and Rex. They had their nick names, known as Spuid and X-Ray.
